the announcement was made around midnight south african time. people have been flocking to his home in black and white fitting for a man whose legacy was defined by reconciliation, by reaching out a hand to the white minority in south africa and embracing them as part of south africa's fledgling democracy when he was released after 27 years in jail. his bad is in pretoria where he will stay -- body is in pretoria where he will stay for five days so the public can view his body and then it will be flown two hours to his rural village where there should be a private family burial and funeral within about the next 10 days. cbs news, johannesburg. >> a public funeral for him will be held before his burial. world leaders will attend including president obama. in june of 1994, months after he was released from prison, nelson mandela visited the united states.

more than 70,000 people packed the open coliseum here to see him. and as kpix 5's christin ayers explains, he came because the east bay was the leader in the apartheid movement. >> reporter: a memorial of nelson mandela and a host of other humanitarian giants. >> it is you the people of oakland, the people of the bay area, who have given me and my delegation the hope to continue the struggle. >> reporter: it was no accident that nelson mandela made oakland the final stop on his 1990 u.s. freedom tour. >> the east bay was a center of the test to change the south african government and get rid of apartheid. >> reporter: ron dellums was the first to introduce antiapartheid legislation in 1972 and 7 years later berkeley

became the first in the nation to divest from south africa. >> in the '80s the divestment movement on the campus began in force. >> reporter: assemblywoman nancy skinner was part of the movement. sit-ins and mass arrests at uc- berkeley to force the campus to cut ties with corporations linked with the apartheid government. the board of regents voted to divest in 1986. so mandela's visit here four years later was particularly emotional for the east bay. >> never, ever forget it ever. >> reporter: skinner says south africa's victory was one of the east bay shared. >> it was so thrilling that we americans, that we east bay residence, could have been part of something with that kind of global impact. >> reporter: in oakland, christin ayers, kpix 5. >> former san francisco mayor willie brown served as host when mandela made his bay area visit back in 1990. >> president kennedy was assassinated, his brother

main break. this is in martinez. it happened last night around 10:30. the water has since been shut off but did create a mess with water going into a number of yards and garages in neighboring homes. police in hercules are looking for a possible serial burglar. at least eight burglaries have been reported over a three-week period. most of them happened in the birds. in every instance the door was pried open. they may be connected. two security cameras caught a man burglarizing a home. you can see the suspect digging through some personal belongings inside the house. the department released the video this week and officers say almost immediately after, calls flooded in and they arrested this man 28-year-old

more about the girl who disappeared so many years ago. >> it was horrible. >> reporter: robert hanson of pacifica was shocked to learn cory was identified as the girl whose remained were found two decades ago in santa cruz. cory lived on manor drive in pacifica with her parents both who died recently. they had adopted cory from a relative. she was a chronic runaway. it was a traumatic ordeal for the family as cory would leave home for a few days spending the night in homeless shelters in san francisco, come back, only to run away again. >> you know how some kids go through difficult teen years, she is one of those who didn't adjust. >> reporter: her body was found in santa cruz in january of 1994. police can't quite explain why

her parents didn't report her missing until 2007. >> they had record her missing a number of times -- reported her missing a number of times. maybe the last time she ran away they didn't report her but i know they had reported her before. >> reporter: joe vazquez, kpix 5. >> no one is arrested for the murder. a father and son named greg and wayne white are persons of interest: father is dead. the son lives in tennessee. new this morning an investigation is under way into the construction of a barge by google on san francisco bay. the bay conservation and development commission will determine whether google and the owners after a pier on treasure island have the necessary permits. google says it's already making changes requested by the coast guard. they plan to open a floating retail store. a ray of hope this morning in the effort to save whales stranded in the everglades. why there's now reason for optimism. >> and a blast of arctic weather grips much of the country.

>> reporter: in fact, building inspectors in october cited this downtown oakland sears for blight. >> invites graffiti. >> reporter: it's because of the boarded up windows on telegraph avenue and 20th street. protestors broke them back in july. but five months later, sears still hasn't replaced them. neighbors and business owners say it's not the better way but a bad way to do business. >> like they could care less about the city of oakland. we just want you to come and spend your money but we don't really care. >> reporter: tina johnson runs a fast-food place nearby. like many she is sympathetic to what sears has experienced. violent protestors smashed its windows every time. some suspect the large retailer simply gave up on replacing them. >> they should make a decision as to whether they want to continue to do business in oakland and if so, then they need to clean it up. >> reporter: sears doesn't have any immediate plans to replace
